His novel scholarly agenda emphasizes the emic (insider) perspective, based on the presumption that oppressed communities possess solutions to the conundrums they face within their wisdom.
Three main tenets inform and underscore the services at Foster Youth Empowered: Centering personal lived experience, Emphasizing strength-based perspectives, and Leveraging evidence based strategies and solutions.
Drawing on critical, anti-deficit frameworks and rigorous qualitative methods, Dr. Amechi investigates how public policies (i.e., federal, state, and institutional) can promote more equitable college and workforce transitions among youth and young adults with foster care experience.
He also explores how race and intersectionality of other marginalized identities uniquely shape their experiences. Ultimately, his program of research emphasizes educational equity, access, racial justice, college and career readiness, and persistence for underserved student populations.
